Camelot wheel: every key and what mixes with it
The Camelot wheel gives each of the 24 keys a code from 1A to 12B, so you can tell at a glance which tracks mix together without thinking in sharps and flats. Here is the full chart, with the chords for every key one click away.
The chart
| Code | Minor key | Code | Major key |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1A | G# minor (Ab minor) | 1B | B major |
| 2A | Eb minor | 2B | F# major |
| 3A | Bb minor | 3B | Db major |
| 4A | F minor | 4B | Ab major |
| 5A | C minor | 5B | Eb major |
| 6A | G minor | 6B | Bb major |
| 7A | D minor | 7B | F major |
| 8A | A minor | 8B | C major |
| 9A | E minor | 9B | G major |
| 10A | B minor | 10B | D major |
| 11A | F# minor | 11B | A major |
| 12A | C# minor | 12B | E major |
A is minor, B is major. Each number pairs a minor key with its relative major: the two share all seven notes.
Which keys mix together
- The same code: 8A to 8A. Same key, always safe.
- One number up or down: 8A to 7A or 9A. The keys share six of seven notes, so the blend sounds smooth. One step up the wheel lifts the energy a little.
- Switching letter on the same number: 8A to 8B. A minor to C major, the same notes with a brighter mood.
The wheel wraps around, so 12A sits next to 1A.
Using it when you produce
- Write in a key next to the tracks you want to be played with. A tech house tool in 8A drops into a lot of DJ sets.
- Pick samples and loops by key code: anything with the same number, or one step away, will sit with your chords.
- Tune your kick to the root or the fifth of the key, so it supports the bass. See how to tune your kick to the key.
Where the codes come from
The Camelot system was made popular by Mixed In Key, the key detection software. Most DJ software shows the same keys either as Camelot codes or as ordinary key names, and this chart translates between the two.
