Milliseconds to BPM

Know the length of a loop, a delay or a bar in milliseconds? Type it in and pick what it is, and you get the tempo.

120 BPM

The formula: BPM is 60,000 ÷ the length of one beat in ms. A bar in 4/4 is four beats, so for a bar it is 240,000 ÷ ms.

The formula: one quarter note in ms is 60,000 ÷ BPM. An eighth is half of that, a dotted note is 1.5 times as long, and a triplet is two thirds.

Questions

How do you convert BPM to milliseconds?

Divide 60,000 by the BPM to get one quarter note in ms. At 124 BPM that is 483.87 ms. A dotted note is 1.5 times longer, and a triplet is two thirds as long.

What delay time should I use?

Start with a dotted 1/8 for a rhythmic delay that fills the gaps between beats, or a straight 1/4 for an echo that lands on the beat. Lower the feedback if the repeats start to clutter the mix.

How do I set reverb pre-delay and decay to the tempo?

A pre-delay of a 1/64 or 1/32 note keeps the reverb off the transient. A decay that ends before the next beat, like a 1/4 or 1/2 note, keeps the groove tight.

What is the delay time for 128 BPM?

A quarter note at 128 BPM is 468.75 ms, an eighth 234.38 ms, a dotted eighth 351.56 ms and a sixteenth 117.19 ms. The chart on this page lists every common tempo.

How do you convert milliseconds to BPM?

Divide 60,000 by the length of one beat in ms. 500 ms is 120 BPM. If the length is a whole bar in 4/4, divide 240,000 by it instead: a 1,875 ms bar is 128 BPM.

What is the Hz value for?

It is the same note length as a rate, for LFOs, tremolo and auto-pan that are set in Hz instead of note values.
