Questions

How do I split a song into stems?

Choose the song and wait while it is separated into vocals, drums, bass and the other instruments. Play the parts together, mute or solo them, and download each one as a WAV file, or the instrumental without vocals.

Is my song uploaded?

No. The song is separated in your browser and never leaves your computer. The model downloads once, about 130 MB (180 MB in browsers without graphics acceleration), and is kept by the browser for next time.

Is it free, and is there a limit?

It is free, with no account, no queue and no limit on how many songs you split. Songs can be up to 6 minutes long.

How long does it take?

On a computer with a recent graphics card, a three-minute song takes around half a minute. Without graphics acceleration in the browser it runs on the processor and takes about as long as the song, or longer.

Does it work on a phone?

It may, on recent phones with a lot of memory. Separating a song needs more memory than many phones give a browser tab, and the tab can close. It works best on a computer.

How good is the MIDI?

A starting point, not a finished part. Notes from a separated part pick up traces of the other instruments, so each part shows its notes in a piano roll first: play them over the part, adjust the sensitivity and the shortest note, and download when it sounds right.

What does it use?

Demucs v4 by Meta for the separation (MIT licence), run through demucs-web and ONNX Runtime Web, and Basic Pitch by Spotify for the notes.
