Can you use Serum 1 presets in Serum 2?
Yes. Serum 1 presets load in Serum 2 and show up in its preset browser on their own, with the ratings you gave them in Serum 1. It does not work the other way: a preset made or saved in Serum 2 cannot be opened in Serum 1.
Serum 1 presets in Serum 2
Xfer describes Serum 1 presets as fully compatible with Serum 2. You do not have to convert or move anything: Serum 2 finds the presets Serum 1 already knows about and lists them in its browser. Ratings you gave presets in Serum 1 are carried over the first time you open Serum 2.
The Serum 1 wavetables and noise files come with Serum 2 too, so presets that use them sound the same.
Serum 2 presets in Serum 1: no
Serum 2 saves presets as .SerumPreset files, while Serum 1 uses .fxp. Serum 1 cannot open the new format, and that includes Serum 1 presets you open and save again in Serum 2. If you share presets with someone who only has Serum 1, keep the original .fxp file.
Moving your old presets into Serum 2
If you no longer need Serum 1, you can move your old presets into the User folder of Serum 2, according to Splice's guide:
| System | Serum 2 User folder |
|---|---|
| Mac | ~/Library/Audio/Presets/Xfer Records/Serum 2 Presets/Presets/User |
| Windows | C:\Users\[your name]\Documents\Xfer\Serum 2 Presets\Presets\User |
Rescan or restart Serum 2 afterwards. If the folder is not where you expect, see where the Serum 2 presets folder is.
If your Serum 1 presets are missing in Serum 2
Serum 2 finds Serum 1 presets through the folder Serum 1 was set to use. If you moved that folder, open Serum 1, point it to the new location, then open Serum 2 again so it rescans. Moving the presets into the Serum 2 User folder above also works, and makes Serum 2 independent of Serum 1.
Old projects that use Serum 1
Projects with Serum 1 are not switched to Serum 2 automatically. Both plugins can be installed at the same time, so old projects keep working. To move a track over, open Serum 2 on the channel and load the same preset, then compare by ear before you remove Serum 1.
