Questions
How does the chord progression generator work?
It writes four chords in the key and scale you pick, following which chords usually lead to which in pop, film and electronic music. It only uses chords with a perfect fifth, so there are no diminished or augmented chords, and every progression starts on the home chord.
What do the moods mean?
Each mood is a scale. Sad is natural minor, Uplifting is major, Soulful is Dorian, Dark is Phrygian, Dramatic is harmonic minor, Dreamy is Lydian and Bright is Mixolydian. The scale decides which chords are minor and which are major.
What are the Roman numerals?
They show where each chord sits in the key: I is the home chord, V the fifth. Capitals are major chords and small letters minor, so i, VI, III, VII is a minor home chord followed by three major ones. The same numerals work in every key.
What does 7ths do?
It adds the seventh from the scale to every chord, so Am becomes Am7 and F becomes Fmaj7. Deep house, soul and lo-fi use sevenths almost everywhere; they make the chords warmer and less final.
How are the chords voiced?
Like a keyboard player would: notes the next chord shares stay where they are, and the others move to the nearest new note. The bass plays the root an octave below. The MIDI file has the same voicing, with chords and bass on separate tracks.
Can I use the progressions in my own music?
Yes. Chord progressions cannot be owned, and everything the generator makes is yours to use, release and sell.
