Tips for MP3 files

What converts well

One instrument or voice at a time: a vocal, a synth line, a piano part, a bass stem. A full song still gives notes, but drums, bass and chords all add their own.

MP3 quality

Normal MP3s work fine. A very low-quality file can have swirly artefacts in the highs that show up as short notes; raise Shortest note to remove them.

Pick the right mode

Melody for single-note lines, Chords for piano, guitar and pads, Bass for bass lines. Switching mode after the conversion updates the notes straight away.

Tempo from the file name

If the file name has the tempo in it, like "loop 124 BPM.mp3", the converter uses it, so the MIDI lines up with the grid in your DAW.

A full song? Split it into vocals, drums, bass and instruments first with the stem separator, and get MIDI for each part.

Note detection uses Basic Pitch by Spotify (Apache License 2.0). The beat uses the drums from RAW POWER.

Put real drums on your MIDI with RAW POWER →163 tech house drum samples, the same kit as our drum machine. $29.

Questions

How do I convert an MP3 to MIDI?

Choose what is in the MP3 (melody, chords or bass), drop the file in, and the notes appear in a piano roll. Play the MIDI over the original to check it, adjust the sensitivity if notes are missing or extra, and download the MIDI file.

Can I convert a whole song to MIDI?

You can, up to 4 minutes, but with drums, bass and chords together the notes get crowded. Convert one part at a time from stems for a result you can use.

Which formats can I use?

MP3, WAV, FLAC and M4A, up to 4 minutes long.

Is my MP3 uploaded?

No. The file is decoded and converted in your browser and never leaves your computer or phone.
