Tips for vocals

Hum or sing on a vowel

A clear "ooh" or "la" gives cleaner notes than words, since consonants and breaths can read as short notes. Humming works well too.

One voice, no backing

Record the voice on its own. Music behind it, harmonies or a click in the headphones bleeding into the mic all add notes that are not yours.

Vibrato and slides

MIDI has one pitch per note, so vibrato and slides into notes can split into small steps. Raise Shortest note to merge them into the note you meant.

Check the octave

Notes are written where you sang them. If you want the melody higher for a lead synth, move the MIDI up an octave in your DAW.

A full song? Split it into vocals, drums, bass and instruments first with the stem separator, and get MIDI for each part.

Note detection uses Basic Pitch by Spotify (Apache License 2.0). The beat uses the drums from RAW POWER.

Put real drums on your MIDI with RAW POWER →163 tech house drum samples, the same kit as our drum machine. $29.

Questions

Can I hum a melody and turn it into MIDI?

Yes. Record the hum on your phone or in your DAW, drop the file in with Melody selected, and the notes appear in the piano roll. Play them back over your voice to check them.

Can it convert a vocal from a finished song?

It works best on a vocal on its own. In a full mix the instruments add their own notes. Use an isolated vocal stem if you have one.

Does it correct my pitch?

Each note is placed on the nearest semitone, so slightly flat or sharp singing still comes out as the right note.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. The file is decoded and converted in your browser and never leaves your computer or phone.
