EDM drum pattern
Mainstage EDM keeps the drums simple and loud: a big kick on every beat, a clap on 2 and 4 and an open hat between the kicks. It is at 128 BPM, the usual tempo for big room and electro house.

How the pattern is built
- Kick 21
- A big, long kick on every beat. In EDM the kick and the bass are often side-chained so they never hit at once.
- Clap 12
- Clap on 2 and 4. Layering two or three claps is common for width.
- Open HH 03
- Open hat on every offbeat, the drive between the kicks.
Make it your own
- For a build-up, double the snare to every eighth, then every sixteenth, over eight bars.
- Take the kick out for the last bar before the drop to make the drop hit harder.
- Add a ride on the offbeats in the drop for more energy.

Questions
What BPM is EDM?
Big room and electro house are usually 126 to 130 BPM, most often 128. Other EDM styles vary: dubstep is 140, drum and bass around 174.
How do I make EDM drums sound big?
Use a long kick with plenty of low end, layer the clap, side-chain the bass and pads to the kick, and keep the rest of the drums simple so the kick and clap have space.
What is side-chaining?
Turning the volume of one sound down every time another plays, usually the bass and pads ducking under the kick. It makes the kick cut through and gives EDM its pumping feel.
