Hard techno drum pattern
Hard techno is fast and loud. This one is at 150 BPM with no swing: the kick on every beat, hats between the kicks and the open hats, and a short perc right before each kick to push the groove forward.

The basic hard techno beat
Strip the pattern down to kick, clap and closed hat and you have the basic hard techno beat: the part that makes it hard techno before anything else is added. Start there, get the kick and bass sitting together, then bring in the rest. Press Basic beat above to hear it and download it as MIDI.
How the pattern is built
- Kick 03
- A deep kick on every beat. In a track it is often distorted, with a rumble behind it that fills the gaps.
- Closed HH 11
- Closed hats on the off-sixteenths, between the kicks and the open hats. Short and quiet.
- Open HH 03
- Open hat on the offbeat, between the kicks.
- Clap 12
- Clap on 2 and 4. Many hard techno tracks drop it entirely and run on kick and hats alone.
- Perc 01
- A short perc on the sixteenth before each beat, pushing into the next kick.
Make it your own
- Mute the clap for the hypnotic, kick-and-hats-only sections.
- Close the filter on everything but the kick for a breakdown, then open it for the drop.
- Try 145 BPM for a slightly heavier, less frantic feel.

Questions
What BPM is hard techno?
Mostly 140 to 160 BPM, with a lot of current hard techno between 145 and 155.
What is a rumble kick?
A kick followed by a low rumble on the offbeats: the kick is sent through a reverb and distortion, then filtered so only the low end is left. It fills the space between the kicks with bass.
Does hard techno use swing?
Almost never. The drums are straight, and the energy comes from speed, distortion and the kick.
