Melodic techno drum pattern
In melodic techno the drums drive but stay out of the way of long synth lines and pads. At 124 BPM, this one is straight and spare: a deep kick, a clap kept low in the mix and an offbeat hat, with a top loop from the pack for the movement.

How the pattern is built
- Kick 21
- Four on the floor with a long, deep kick. Melodic techno leaves the space above it to the pads and the lead.
- Clap 12
- A clap on two and four, kept low in the mix.
- Open HH 03
- An open hat on every offbeat, straight, with no swing. That straight drive is what separates melodic techno from house.
Make it your own
- Mute the clap in the breakdown and let the kick and the hat carry the bar.
- Turn the room up in the drum machine for the washed-out claps of the genre.
- Keep the swing at 0: a straight grid is part of the cold, hypnotic sound of the genre.

Questions
What BPM is melodic techno?
Usually 120 to 126 BPM, most often around 122 to 124.
How are melodic techno drums different from techno?
They come from the same family, a kick on every beat and offbeat hats, but softer and further back in the mix, so the melodies and pads lead. Peak-time techno puts the drums in front.
What kick suits melodic techno?
A deep kick with a short attack and a long, round low end, ideally tuned to the key of the track.
