Trance drum pattern

Trance drums are fast, straight and simple, so the bassline and the leads can carry the track. At 138 BPM: a kick on every beat, a clap on two and four and an open hat on every offbeat, and nothing else on top.

Questions

What BPM is trance?

Usually 132 to 140 BPM, with uplifting trance often at 138. Psytrance is usually 140 to 148.

Does trance use swing?

Almost never. The drums are straight, and the movement comes from the offbeat bass and the leads.

Why is the trance bass on the offbeat?

With a kick on every beat, the bass plays in the gaps between them, so the two never fight for the low end. That kick-bass-kick-bass motion is the trance pulse.
